Biography

Tanvir received his M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Islamic University of Technology (IUT). He was awarded the IUT Gold Medal-2018 in recognition of his notable academic performance. In his master’s thesis, he characterized the ocean wave energy resources in the exclusive economic zones of the Bay of Bengal. His bachelor’s thesis involved modeling a power plant driven by a wave energy converter to meet the electricity demand of Saint Martin’s Island, Bangladesh. Before coming to UT Austin, Tanvir was a lecturer at his alma mater in the Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering (2019-2023). His current research primarily focuses on machine learning, specifically on building tangent-linear and adjoint models to understand AMOC (The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) sensitivities as part of a U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) project. When not studying, Tanvir can be found anywhere there's water for a good swim or at a nearby movie theater.
